About this wine

Château d'Issan is one of the most historic estates in Margaux — a Third Grand Cru Classé whose moated Renaissance château and motto 'Regum mensis arisque deorum' (For the tables of kings and the altars of gods) says everything about its pedigree. The estate dates to the 12th century and the Cruse family has owned it since 1945. Blason d'Issan is the second wine: Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, selected from younger vines across d'Issan's 53 hectares of gravel and sand on the Margaux plateau. The 2022 vintage was one of the warmest and most concentrated in decades — a dry growing season producing rich, full wines with remarkable depth. Blason d'Issan 2022 reflects this: more structured and riper than the 2020, with the Margaux perfume still intact beneath the greater density.

Tasting notes

Deep garnet with purple hues. The nose is rich and intense — ripe blackcurrant and dark plum lead, with violet, sandalwood and a warm spice note. On the palate, full-bodied and concentrated with firm, ripe tannins and excellent fruit density. The 2022 heat shows in the weight, but Margaux's elegant profile keeps the wine from heaviness. Long finish with dark fruit and cedar. Benefits from another year or two.

From the winemaker

Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from younger vines of Château d'Issan's 53-hectare estate on the Margaux plateau; gravel and sandy soils; classic Margaux vinification; aged in French oak barriques; 2022 — exceptionally warm, dry vintage; Cruse family estate since 1945.

Editor's note

The 2022 Blason d'Issan is a different proposition to the 2020: more concentrated, more structured, built for the longer haul. The heat of the vintage delivered depth and fruit density, and the Margaux soils kept the elegance. Decant it, give it time, pair it with something serious. It will reward patience.
