About this wine

Vino de Pago is the highest classification in Spain — an estate-level designation granted only where a property demonstrates consistent, distinguishable terroir character. There are fifteen in the country. Finca Aylés in Aragón is one of them. The Ramón Reula family began restoring the historic estate in the 1980s; today the entire vineyard is certified organic and sits at 650 metres on glacis soils 35 million years old — clay, limestone, calcium — under an extreme micro-continental climate where temperatures swing hard between seasons and between day and night. The UNexpected Garnacha is the variety the terroir suits most naturally: cherry, dried herbs, white pepper, and a freshness that altitude-grown Garnacha offers and warmer-climate versions rarely do. 91 points, James Suckling.

Tasting notes

Deep cherry-garnet. The nose is immediately appealing — ripe cherry, strawberry and violet, with dried herbs and a white-pepper thread that speaks to altitude and cool nights. On the palate, generous and soft-textured with light tannins and a lively freshness that keeps everything in balance. Red plum and garrigue carry through to a clean, well-formed finish. Approachable now and easy to return to.

From the winemaker

100% Garnacha; certified organic; Finca Aylés (Vino de Pago Aylés), Aragón; 650m altitude on 35-million-year-old glacis soils of clay, limestone and calcium; extreme micro-continental climate. Ramón Reula family estate, restored from the 1980s.

Editor's note

Garnacha is planted all over Spain, but Pago Aylés is not everywhere. Estate-certified terroir — one of just fifteen Vinos de Pago in the country — at 650 metres on ancient limestone soils, farmed organically by the Ramón Reula family since the 1980s. What the altitude and organic farming do to Garnacha: cherry, strawberry, white pepper, and a freshness that warmer-grown versions rarely hold. 91 points from James Suckling. Open it with anything off the grill.
