About this wine
Nobody expects Chardonnay from Aragón. That is partly the point. Finca Aylés in northeastern Spain holds Vino de Pago status — one of only fifteen such estate-level designations in the country — and at 650 metres on 35-million-year-old glacis soils of clay, limestone and calcium, it grows grapes with the character its ancient terroir demands. The Ramón Reula family farms the entire estate organically. The Chardonnay receives slight oak: not to impose flavour, but to add breadth and a soft texture to what the altitude and cool continental nights preserve in freshness and acidity. A Spanish white from an unlikely address that earns the attention.
Tasting notes
Pale gold with a clear, bright aspect. The nose is focused and inviting — white peach and citrus lead, with a delicate hazelnut note from the light oak integration and a green apple brightness in the background. On the palate, balanced and medium-weight with lively acidity, a soft creamy texture from the oak contact, and a clean, persistent finish. Less oak-driven than Burgundy, more expressive than most Spanish white wine. Drink young.
Aromas
white peach, citrus, lemon zest, hazelnut, almond, green apple, vanilla

From the winemaker
100% Chardonnay; certified organic; slight oak contact; Finca Aylés (Vino de Pago Aylés), Aragón; 650m altitude on 35-million-year-old glacis soils of clay, limestone and calcium; extreme micro-continental climate. Ramón Reula family estate.
Editor's note
The Vino de Pago classification at Finca Aylés applies to everything the Ramón Reula family grows here — including this organically farmed Chardonnay at 650 metres on ancient limestone soils. Slightly oaked means the wood completes rather than dominates: white peach, citrus, a delicate hazelnut thread, good acidity. It challenges the assumption that serious Spanish white wine comes only from Galicia or Rioja. It is right.
