About this wine
Syrah at altitude is one of wine's more reliable combinations. The variety thrives when cool nights slow ripening and preserve the aromatics that define great Syrah — the black pepper, the violet, the savoury depth — while warm days deliver the concentrated, ripe fruit to fill the wine out. At Finca Aylés in Aragón, 650 metres and an extreme micro-continental climate provide exactly this. The entire estate is certified organic; the 2019 vintage has had time to settle and develop. The result leans more towards the focused, aromatic intensity of the Northern Rhône than the warmer-fruited styles of southern Spain — structured and complex, still improving, and rated 91 points by James Suckling.
Tasting notes
Deep purple-garnet with a mature, evolved rim. The nose is complex and developed — blackberry and black cherry at the core, with violet, black pepper, a thread of olive and dried herb, and a savoury leathery note that speaks to time in bottle. On the palate, full and well-structured with medium tannins and a freshness that keeps the wine alive. Long finish with earthy spice and a hint of smoked meat. A Syrah that has opened up well and still has years ahead.

From the winemaker
100% Syrah; certified organic; Finca Aylés (Vino de Pago Aylés), Aragón; 650m altitude on 35-million-year-old glacis soils of clay, limestone and calcium; extreme micro-continental climate. Ramón Reula family estate, restored from the 1980s.
Editor's note
The 2019 Syrah from Finca Aylés is old enough to be interesting and young enough to still improve. 650 metres, extreme continental climate, certified organic farming, ancient clay-limestone soils. Blackberry, violet, black pepper, olive, savoury leather, and a freshness that six-year-old warmer-climate Syrah rarely holds. 91 points from James Suckling. Drinking well now; keep some back.
