About this wine

Friuli makes Italy's most serious Pinot Grigio — not the bulk commodity but the aromatic, lees-aged white that shows what the variety can actually do. Rino Russolo Sr. understood this when he founded the estate in 1925, one of Italy's first oenology graduates. His grandson Rino Jr. runs it today. The Ronco Calaj is the family's main and most extensive vineyard, on the alluvial fan of the Cellina River at the foot of the Dolomiti Friulane — a deep layer of glacial limestone and dolomite that gives the wine its mineral precision. Hand-picked, gently pressed, fermented cold in stainless at 14 to 16°C, then kept on fine lees until bottling. White peach, pear, acacia flowers, a clean citrus finish. A Pinot Grigio with real typicity.

Tasting notes

Pale yellow with a clean, bright aspect. The nose is delicate and fragrant — white peach, pear and acacia flower, with a fresh citrus lift and lemon blossom in the background. On the palate, elegantly fruity and well-structured: good acidity, a soft texture from the lees aging, and a clean, persistent finish with a gentle almond note. The freshness of a young wine made properly. Drink within two to three years.

From the winemaker

100% Pinot Grigio from Ronco Calaj vineyard (Selezione Cru); alluvial limestone-dolomite soils at foot of Dolomiti Friulane, Friuli Grave plain; hand-harvested; soft pressing; stainless steel fermentation at 14–16°C; aged on fine lees until bottling. Russolo family estate, founded 1925; now run by Rino Russolo Jr.

Editor's note

Friuli makes Italy's most serious Pinot Grigio — aromatic, textured, lees-aged, and completely different from the commodity version the variety's name often conjures. Russolo has been at it since 1925. The Ronco Calaj is their main cru: alluvial limestone and dolomite at the foot of the Dolomites, cold stainless fermentation, lees aging until bottling. White peach, pear, acacia, clean citrus finish. The kind of Pinot Grigio that gives the grape its reputation back.
