About this wine

Brett Butcher founded Soumah in 1997 with one quiet conviction: that the cool-climate Yarra Valley could give Australia a serious answer to the great Syrahs of the Northern Rhône — and so the wine is bottled as Syrah, never as Shiraz. The Hexham vineyard sits at around 120 metres on poor sandy soils with bands of loam and clay, slopes that drain freely under a climate whose average temperatures sit between those of Bordeaux and Burgundy — rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn — with Yarra's cool nights ripening the fruit evenly. Three Syrah clones are picked by hand, vinified as a single plot, then aged eighteen months in 500-litre French oak with a quarter new barrels. SWA Gold medal — a Northern-Rhône register in Australian dress.

Tasting notes

Deep purple-red. The nose is modern and layered: black cherry and plum at the core, then violets, cracked pepper and dried herbs, with smoky notes of toast, tobacco and leather lifting behind. The palate carries real power and a fine woody touch, both held in check by the fruit. Long, intense, balanced finish — already drinking beautifully, with a few more years in the cellar yet to come.

Food pairings

Slow-roasted lamb shoulder, Pepper steak, Aged Gouda or Comté, Game meats with dark berry sauce
