About this wine
Château Cantemerle is the southernmost 5ème Cru Classé of the 1855 classification, sitting on a gravel-rich plateau just north of Bordeaux on the route into the Médoc. The grand vin is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant — typically around 70% — balanced by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot, aged for twelve to fourteen months in French oak. The 2021 vintage was cooler and more classical than the warm years preceding it, with a late harvest that suited the property's late-ripening Cabernet and produced a wine of finesse, freshness and gentle structure rather than power.
Tasting notes
Medium-deep ruby. The nose opens on blackcurrant, dark cherry, violet and a thread of cedar, with the savoury Médoc whisper of graphite and gentle spice. The palate is medium-bodied and elegantly structured — fine, silky tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, fresh finish marked by red and black fruit. A classical Haut-Médoc that already gives pleasure and will reward another five to eight years in the cellar.
Food pairings
Rack of lamb, Roast beef with thyme, Mushroom and truffle dishes, Aged hard cheeses
