About this wine

Château La Lagune sits at the southern tip of the Médoc, the first classified growth you reach after leaving Bordeaux — the only Third Grand Cru Classé in the Haut-Médoc appellation. Moulin du Château La Lagune is its second wine, made from younger vines and declassified parcels using the same meticulous approach that defines the grand vin. The estate is owned by the Frey family, who also own Champagne Billecart-Salmon, and has been farmed with strict environmental standards for decades. The 2021 vintage delivered freshness over weight — a cooler, more elegant year in Bordeaux, where careful selection rewarded producers who knew when to pick. Cabernet Sauvignon leads with blackcurrant and cedar; Merlot adds plum and mid-palate flesh; the result is a Haut-Médoc that punches well above second-wine status.

Tasting notes

Deep ruby with garnet edges. The nose shows blackcurrant, fresh plum and cedar, with a dry earthy note and a thread of dark tobacco. On the palate, medium-bodied and well-structured: firm but polished tannins, lively acidity, and clean fruit through to the finish. Classic Médoc in form — linear, mineral, restrained. Drinks well now with food, better in two or three years.

Aromas

blackcurrant, fresh plum, cedar, tobacco, graphite, dried herbs, dark cherry

From the winemaker

Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend from younger vines and selected parcels of Château La Lagune; vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel; aged in French oak barriques (fraction new oak); Frey family estate, farmed to environmental certification standards.

Editor's note

La Lagune is the southernmost classified growth in the Médoc — the first you hit driving out of Bordeaux, and one of the most consistent. The Moulin is everything the second wine of a serious estate should be: same approach, same soils, same winemaking team. The 2021 is fresh, structured, and completely honest about what Haut-Médoc does at its best.
