About this wine

Giovanni Rosso is a family estate in Serralunga d'Alba, Piemonte — one of the most mineral and long-lived villages in Barolo, where the galenite soils produce Nebbiolos of extraordinary structure. Their Etna project brings the same philosophy to the north slope of Mount Etna: old Nerello Mascalese vines on volcanic basalt soils at altitude, where extreme diurnal temperature variation and a season shaped by proximity to an active volcano produce wines of a very different character to anything made at sea level. The 2019 vintage on Etna was warm and generous — richer fruit expression than cooler years, good depth, and the volcanic mineral thread that makes this DOC so compelling still clearly present.

Tasting notes

Deep ruby with garnet edges, fine transparency. The nose is fragrant and layered — fresh red cherry, wild strawberry and dried rose petal, with a distinct volcanic mineral note and a hint of iron beneath. On the palate, medium-bodied with silky tannins and a vivid, bright acidity. The 2019 warmth delivers ripe, generous fruit, but the volcanic soils keep the wine precise and long. The comparison to Burgundy here earns its place.

From the winemaker

Nerello Mascalese from old vines on the north slope of Mount Etna; volcanic basalt soils at altitude; classic Etna vinification; aged in large Slavonian oak casks; 2019 — warm, concentrated vintage; Giovanni Rosso, extending the Serralunga estate philosophy to Etna.

Editor's note

Giovanni Rosso made their name in Serralunga with Barolo that punches above its weight — the same terroir-first instinct, the same commitment to mineral precision. Their Etna Rosso brings that philosophy to the volcano: Nerello Mascalese, old vines, volcanic basalt, the north slope. The 2019 is richer than a cool year would be, but the mineral signature is intact. The Burgundy comparison is overused for Etna, but here it earns its place.
